Imagine your dream stairs
Custom stair construction, remodeling, restoration, and repair for interior staircases throughout Portland and the surrounding Oregon area.
Find your style

modern
These staircases have clean lines with a geometrical feel. Overall, they are very minimal with metal or glass and wood railings. You may be leaning toward this style if you favor minimalist interior design.

traditional
An all wood system is common for traditional staircases. These may have square newels, turned balusters, and an elaborate railing profile. You may even notice wainscotting on the wall with different types of detailed moldings.

rustic
In order to capture the natural feel, rustic staircases have wood with a lot of color variation or mineral deposits and medium to large knots. Woods are generally graded as 1, 2, or 3. Grade 1 is very clean with no knots. Grade 3 is on the opposite end with a lot of character and variation.

cabled
Horizontal stainless steel cables with termination fittings are what make cabled staircases stand out. They may have metal or wood posts, and the cable size itself can range between 1/8” or 3/16” for a more modern look.

spiral
If your home has limited space or you want the staircase itself to take up a smaller footprint in the layout, a spiral staircase may be the best option for your space. A round system like this is usually used in an area where a conventional staircase will not work due to spatial constraints.

curved
Curved staircases make a dramatic statement and require custom handrails shaped to match the sweep of the stairs. They are often built with continuous rails, volutes, and carefully turned newels for a graceful flow.
The First Step
A staircase is an essential part of a home. But building and maintaining them requires specialty and hard work. We're here to make things easy by ensuring your stairs are the perfect fit for you and your home.
Transform Your Space
We take care of all things stairs, including custom builds, remodels, restoration, and repair. Licensed in Oregon. We work exclusively on interior builds.
Custom Staircases
New stair systems and custom stair parts for when wood species, railing profile, or fabrication requires something more unique or fitted. We work with a list of proven vendors and artisans to build components you can’t buy off the shelf.
Stair Remodeling
Update outdated staircases, remove carpet, replace damaged components, and rebuild poorly executed stair systems. Going from a carpeted tread to a hardwood tread with new railings and balusters is what we do most.
Repairs & Safety Improvements
Tread repairs, railing repairs, additional railings for safety. Wall-mounted handrails for the “I just had a hip replacement” or other body part replacement, parents visiting, or a new one-year-old starting to crawl around. Continuous railings for assisted living.
Historic Restoration
Working with historical architects, homeowners, and general contractors on period-appropriate repairs, custom-made wood turnings, and newels. My training lends itself to the problems inherent in existing designs and solving them while staying within the integrity of the design.
One of the only companies specializing in stair systems
We're not general contractors. Stairs are what we do. Shane found early on that he was being asked to do more stair jobs than anything else, and loved the challenge. Over the years, we've built a few thousand staircase systems for satisfied clients in the Portland Metro area.
Since 1976
Shane has been working in the trades since 1976, with a long background in restoration on homes going back to the early 1800s.
A few thousand systems
Between Shane and Gage, we've built and installed several thousand stair systems for Portland-area homes.
Clean, occupied-home work
We've worked in hundreds of occupied homes. Plastic walls, vacuumed tools, and floors swept at the end of every day.
Meet the Stair Guys

Shane Kenney
I have been working in the trades since 1976. I am originally from Boston (yes, that’s where I got my cool accent!) and have done a lot of restoration work on some really old homes, several going back to the early 1800s. Portland Stair Company is one of the only companies specializing in stair systems — I decided to focus on stairs and, over the years, we’ve built a few thousand staircase systems for satisfied clients in the Portland Metro area.

Gage Angstrom
Gage has been building stairs for Portland Stair Company for over 20 years. Trained by an East coast and a West coast stair guy, he’s come up with his own way to build a set of rock solid stairs — attention to details, fast and clean. He has built several thousand stair systems and has no back off on telling the client “don’t do that,” and educates why. That’s the difference between a Stair Guy and a carpenter.
What to expect
Send Us Your Project
Fill out the form and upload photos of your existing stairs. Email is best. In a lot of cases we can give you a range of cost from pictures for budgeting — it also starts the design process and Q&A about what’s possible.
Review the Options
We review the space, walk through design and safety considerations, and give you preliminary guidance. Every staircase is different, so we don’t charge per foot — each project gets its own honest pricing.
Build It Right
We set up a small shop in your garage or an outside space. We plastic off doorways, run our tools in vacuums, and vacuum floors and stairs at the end of every day. You keep access to the upper floor throughout — we too need to get up and down the stairs.
